While the world continues to pursue human interest stories considered relevant by many, adults with autism receive minimal positive media coverage. The exception usually entails stories of limitations, dire circumstances, and despair. Contrary to popular belief, there are autistic adults living vibrant lives that include pursuing their dreams and passions. Those same adults have fully accepted their deficits and shortcomings while embracing autism. They don’t view autism as a debilitating condition that serves as a hindrance to living an exceptional life. Rather, there is an air of confidence that boldly proclaims they are autistic and proud of it. Moreover, there is a calm acceptance of autism – as both the reality of profound deficits in some areas is balanced with the exhilaration of living with extraordinary talents. It is not that these individuals don’t recognize their shortcomings, but they choose to not become victims or allow deficits to define them. Instead, they have made a conscious decision to live life to its fullest and pursue their goals with passion.
Autistic adults who have a positive outlook on life are often resented or even perceived as a threat. Feelings towards them are palpable and without merit in many cases. Reasons may vary as to why autistics are the source of such strong emotions, but a lack of understanding and awareness are usually the root cause. The percentage of autistic adults who possess the ability to ignore the hostilities directed towards them is small, however, they serve as a beacon of hope for others to emulate. Statistics indicate many autistics would prefer to blend into the background as a way of avoiding conflict and drawing attention to themselves. Even if that means accepting rude and obnoxious behavior from peers and associates. Sadly, this is the fate of too many autistic adults as they lack the self-confidence to advocate for themselves. Moreover, others are indifferent to autism related causes and casually dismiss their circumstances with an apathetic shrug. But there are the brave few who are willing to defy the odds and live a bold purpose-driven life. In doing so, they are fulfilling not only their own potential, but blazing new trails for others to follow.
Attitudes from the past are still very influential today in shaping opinions about autism, and disabilities in general. The belief that autistic adults have the capacity to function independently in the world while giving back to society is shocking to some people. The level of expectation continues to be extremely low for autistic adults. When someone shatters those expectations, there is a sense of disbelief and fear. The fear factor is rooted in ignorance and bigotry that some degree of loss will occur if autistic adults are given opportunities to advance. Although it may seem strange, there could be some jealousy involved as some autistics are believed to have some type of mysterious superpower. Needless to say, these are baseless perceptions – but wield tremendous power if given the chance to fester and grow. Fortunately, the universe is vast enough to encompass everyone’s dreams. Consequently, we applaud the brave souls who dare to live life in bold, bright, beautiful colors to maximize all that life offers.
